Some Thoughts
Luth Flavah has had many thoughts lately. More than usual? Not necessarily. They just seem more profound....ehh, maybe. This is regarding discernment. I am blessed to find myself in many situations as a lay person to assist in my discernment. Being a congregation that’s technically in vacancy mode I meet new clergy all the time. Being friends with a fella who is in the first call process I am able to get a good sense of how seminary and synods operate. Being involved in multiple areas of our parish I am able to realize just what it means to be a congregation...what responsibilities we have to each other, to God, to those outside.
The more clergy I’m around, the more I feel the spirit. The more called and ordained workers of Christ I am near, the stronger I feel my call. Then I get to work.....and by midweek I’m pulled into capitalism, I’m pulled into the idolatry of technology and lame pursuits. Then my call pulls back a little. I’m rejuvenated midweek in our midweek service and choir practice....enough to get me through the rest of the week. Come Sunday, the Spirit and grace and peace fill me once again.
It’s this “rest of the week” syndrome that has me concerned. It doesn’t help that this is the *busiest* time of the year for me at work. At slower times I’m able to keep work from being the center of my life. But lately....it’s been interfering with living a Godly life. It’s harder and harder to find time for prayer and reflection. Work prevails, sleep prevails. I find myself starting to question my call in the middle of these times. I’m comforted when I realize that a life in the ministry would not so much have these distractions. I’ve no doubt that *any* life would still be filled with many distractions....but...
Soo....I continue my discernment. It truly feels like a journey on a path. The journey continues...the destination is beautiful.....and the journey itself is glorious.
I was at an event this weekend where I was around a handful of dynamic and interesting pastors. Very inspiring. I can’t imagine how I’ll react at our synod assembly. I’m liable to bust out with my discernment finally.
We’ll see.
